ELMONT, NY — Whether for sports or concerts, UBS Arena is a destination spot for Long Islanders since it opened last fall.

But the arena, with help from Northwell Health, has become more inclusive by designing three sensory rooms for all events.

It allows anyone, although it is primarily geared to children and families, to step away from the noise and lights on the stage "if you're having a trigger moment," Sharon Goodman, a director of nursing at Cohen Children's Medical Center, a guest on "Patch AM," said.

The rooms provide equipment to allow the guests to relax and decompress. Every detail was researched from the type of furniture to the color of the walls-- blue--known to promote calmness.

"It was built so the family could partake in that room altogether," Jennifer Simonetti, another director of nursing at Cohen Children's Medical Center. "It's developed for one family at a time."

Created with special needs in mind, the hospital also helped develop where each room would be located-- one on each level, close to guest services, who received additional training to attend to special needs guests.

A Vecta machine is in the room with different sensory-input devices.

"It has fiber-optical tentacles, which are these magical little colors that you can wrap yourself in and put on you to center yourself," Goodman said.

But that machine is customized to each person's preference.

"If you want more stimulation, you can increase the dial," Simonetti said.

The rooms do not need to be reserved in advance.
