As Toyota advances the production of electric vehicles (EV), hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (FCV) and hybrid electric vehicles (HV), the question is: Is your crash repair facility ready to meet the challenges posed by these vehicles?

Lighter, more advanced vehicles To make vehicles more efficient, Toyota is making lighter, more advanced vehicles:

What does this mean for your collision repair facility?

This means that estimating, diagnosing and repairing EVs, FCVs or HVs damaged in a collision brings new challenges that stores have never seen before, including:

Toyota's Technical Information System (TIS) techinfo.toyota.com provides you with the assets that help you understand these high-tech vehicles. When a Toyota EV, FCV, or HV enters your store for collision repairs, Toyota has an announcement that outlines how to protect itself during repairs and provides precautions that need to be taken before checking and repairing high-voltage circuits.

Best practice When an EV, FCV or HV collides, the battery and its contents may be damaged. The main hazards of damaged batteries and wiring are electric shock and burning. As a precaution, all high-voltage batteries should be considered unstable batteries.

The following are some procedures that technicians need to pay attention to when working on EV, FCV or HV:

There are other guidelines and precautions, so be sure to read the corresponding announcements before starting repairs.

Working on MIRAI fuel cell vehicles Before starting to repair Mirai, you must consult with FCV-qualified Toyota dealers and technicians to assess the damage to the hydrogen fuel system components (ie, fuel cell stack, fuel system pipes, containers, and pipes). Connectors, sensors, regulators and fuel tank components) before collision repairs. Please contact Toyota Customer Experience Center of an FCV qualified dealer: 800 331-4331.

Many of the precautions for EV and HV are the same as Mirai, but you must remember that you are dealing with compressed hydrogen stored in a storage tank.

Before touching the exposed high-voltage terminals, wear insulating gloves and use a tester to ensure that the terminal voltage is 0 V. After disconnecting or exposing high-voltage connectors or terminals, use insulating tape to insulate them immediately.

Safety first, safety is the key. Before using one of these complex vehicles, be sure to conduct research and take appropriate precautions.
