Ericsson's leading optical product portfolio based on WDM technology is the ideal way to ensure optical connectivity to support Verizon's 5G journey, the leading service provider in the United States.

Since 2016, Verizon has evaluated the network concentration model as a possible key stage in its evolution strategy. At the time, Verizon evaluated ways to simplify the radio area network (RAN) and reduce the use of fiber. The answer is an active optical fronthaul solution—Ericsson Fronthaul 6000—to effectively connect its 4G macro site to a centralized baseband hotel.

Ericsson Fronthaul 6000 was introduced into the Verizon network and is now widely deployed. Fronthaul 6000 provides multiple radio services through a single fiber bundle, which can provide lower operating costs and easier configuration. In addition, the centralization of the baseband allows efficient radio coordination across multiple sites. This provides new flexibility for the rapidly changing cellular environment.

Verizon's advantages in the centralization of macro cells have been extended to small cells. This provides a unique opportunity to explore the capabilities of Ericsson's passive solutions in Fronthaul 6000. The modularity and flexibility of Ericsson's remote outdoor solutions allowed Verizon to expand its centralized RAN (CRAN) with multiple new installations (tracks, poles, and hand holes) to reduce site space and concealment in order to obtain permits faster.

Next, the Fronthaul 6000 high-density solution was introduced to Verizon's network. This is a pizza box platform that can further reduce the footprint and power consumption of the CRAN hub. Combined with the passive remote enclosure, it further extends the customer network to semi-passive applications.

The positive results of using Fronthaul 6000 have prompted Verizon to expand the use of Ericsson's solutions to other connection use cases, in which Ericsson's platform has also proven its ability to interoperate with 3PP routers or basebands. Fronthaul 6000 is also used to connect outdoor baseband units with centralized routers in backhaul scenarios. Other important developments are IP and optical convergence, where Fronthaul 6000 is used to effectively increase router bandwidth by multiplexing multiple 10Gbps services on a single fiber.

The strategic cooperation between Ericsson and Verizon continues to this day. And the 5G journey has just begun!
