Camouflage PS5 with a custom wood and carbon fiber shell | Hacker Day

PlayStation 5 has a very unique case, some people like it and some people hate it. Its design is certainly not suitable for lying on its side, even if it is a more practical orientation on the TV console shelf. [Matt] of [DIY Perks] decided to solve this problem and built a custom wood and carbon fiber PS5 shell that looks good in any direction.

He first disassembled his PS5 and only took out the main electronics, fan and power supply. They are mounted on a carbon fiber substrate using a hexagonal threaded support. The side of the shell is made of dark walnut wood, with holes at the front and back for connectors and airflow. A long groove is cut in the front hole and covered with a clever carbon fiber cover, if you press it, it will open, if you press the other end of it, it acts as a power button.

Matt paid close attention to the airflow path of the original case and copied it into the new case. Like the original, he used sticky foam strips to guide the air through the radiator. The top cover is also made of carbon fiber, with an elegant honeycomb pattern, and the air intake has a wooden insert.

This is not [Matt]'s first customized PS5 shell. The other is the significantly more gorgeous brass incarnation of the original. Other custom cases he made include wooden PC cases and brass-encapsulated USB-C displays.

Woo woo woo. This is my reaction to the original box, not the wooden box. I know everyone hates an ordinary beige box nowadays, but I will accept such an embarrassing thing any day.

The wooden box is beautiful!

But I don't like the carbon fiber bottom. I would choose metal, so it acts as a ground plane. Not sure about the notch either. My experience is that no matter how wide your recessed area is, you will always find that accessories with plugs are a bit too wide to install!

The last sponsored dark disk is a bit cool. They really make it look better. Nevertheless, they did not change the terrible shape, and the problem was not really solved until the shape disappeared and was forgotten.

Agree to embedded, but hope that you won't end up plugging so many things into PS5 (HDMI, power, Ethernet, if there is no HDMI audio, it may be optical).

Some of my Dell monitor stands have a similar situation-the ferrules have to be worn off to get them through the slots on the stand!

Some carbon fibers are conductive, and theoretically they can provide some ground plane functions.

Terrible self-adhesive foam strip, yuk! These mucus or crumbs are abominable.

The first is the advantages...there are many. This is an amazing cabinet building. Absolutely beautiful, it evokes the "fine furniture" ethics previously expressed in radio manufacturing in the 1920s or 1930s. One of my favorite style features is the air intake with hexagonal ports. (However, you might consider sticking an aluminum window screen inside. Things will fall into these vents. What? I don’t know... Something that always manages to fall into the upward vents under suction.

Due to the force arm, I hope that the port cover hinge will be damaged during the first or second use. The port cover should be wider and the hinge placed on the top horizontal edge (rather than a single vertical hinge). The top horizontal hinge arrangement will not only be much stronger, but the lid will automatically close.

One failure of this design is the spiked feet! What? There is no useful friction with the surface on which it is placed, and it is guaranteed to have scratches on any beautiful surface on which you place it. Four black rubber plugs will make the feet better...they are black, stylish tapered, provide scratch-free feet, friction and sufficient damping compliance, so fan noise will not be transmitted to your Shelving/entertainment cupboard.

Finally, although I don't find the use of carbon fiber here to be aesthetically objectionable, kc8rwr's point of view is well understood. The metal plate may provide some electrical shielding, in fact, another heat exchange surface.

All in all, this project still got an "A" in my book.

I don't hate design. When you play a game, stare at the TV, not at the console. Who cares what the console looks like?

The strange shape is to prevent children and other objects on the shelf from obstructing the airflow. The rectangular shape used with Xbox is prone to overheating because children tend to put toys, food, drinks, etc. on any nearby flat surface while playing, and they don’t realize that the console needs good airflow to work properly. Like this The awkward shape prevents anyone from using it like a shelf, so you will be much less likely to overheat due to misuse.

Please take the children off the shelf!

Interestingly, there are so many modifications around the PS5, and it is currently difficult or impossible to get one.
